theGATE – SAVE THE DATE

A culture-based initiative for science, technology, cultural & creative industries and society.

Never before have art and science been so intimately entangled as they are today.

At the same time, art finds itself increasingly estranged from its traditional media, spaces and institutions. Computing technologies do not merely extend existing practices; they reconfigure how art relates to life and what art can be.

For centuries artists dreamed of fusing art and life; that Romantic aspiration is now within technological reach. Virtual and augmented realities, real-time computation and networked systems stage experiences in which the boundary between the real and the artificial becomes porous. When a headset, a screen or a mixed-reality device mediates perception, the old polarities – reality and illusion, realism and the imaginary, necessity and desire – begin to lose their hold.

This is not mere technical novelty but a cultural turning point: the capacity to alter perception effectively alters reality. Audiences no longer only receive artworks; they enter, modify and co-author them. Such a shift raises urgent questions about agency, authorship and the social consequences of immersive and algorithmic systems. Is this transformation to be welcomed, resisted, or simply acknowledged as inevitable?

Is this transformation to be welcomed, resisted, or simply acknowledged as inevitable?

THE MEANING of all this

There is a new conception of humanity and nature
– and the changes are coming fast
...We must be prepared for the transformations that lie ahead,
...We must systematically map and research current practices and trajectories,
...We must examine what artists are proposing as forms of cultural experimentation,
...We must track what scientists and engineers are advancing technically and epistemically,
...We must assess which artistic practices hold social relevance and civic potential,
...We must engage with philosophical inquiry about the ethical and conceptual ramifications

Now, it’s eCulture time....

Where, Who and Why?

At the heart of the action – High Performance Computing Center University Stuttgart HLRS

We all use the same tool. That tool is HPC and AI. So why not get together and network directly here at HLRS? Do it with Super Computing and AI Factory HammerHAI.

Global Arts Technology Environment

Never before has art been so close to science as it is now in the electronic age. And never before has art strayed so far from the traditional arts. Digital technology (or computer technology) allows people to connect art with life – finally, one of humanity's oldest and most enduring dreams is coming true: making art a part of life; transforming life into a work of art. What was once a romantic dream is now a technological possibility, thanks to virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). If it is possible to place special glasses (or other devices) in front of our eyes – or in front of one of our eyes, while the other reMayns ‘naked’ and in direct contact with ‘reality’ – the traditional separation between reality and artificiality, reality and illusion, reality and imagination, necessity and desire breaks down and lies in pieces at our feet. Realism and surrealism will no longer have any meaning. People will not have to submit to reality; they will be able to change reality according to their own will. Or at least they will be able to change their perception of reality, if not reality itself.
