Following the first edition of the European Theatre Festival, which focused on the discourse surrounding current threats to (artistic) freedom explicitly in Eastern Europe, Schauspiel Stuttgart is turning its attention in May to an intensive examination of another defining phenomenon of our present day: artificial intelligence.
From 28 May to 1 June, the Kammertheater will be transformed into a theatrical research centre for the Future Innovation Lab. Artificial intelligence has long since transcended the boundaries of purely digital spaces, and in the theatre, too, questions are increasingly being raised not only about its artistic potential, but also about its ethical implications in ever new spheres of our coexistence. With a broad programme of artistic contributions, discussion formats, lectures and workshops, this new "laboratory" will not only offer space for enlightenment, reflection and exchange, but will also explore the concrete forms of application of scientific innovations in artistic processes and make them directly tangible. At the centre of the multi-day programme are four projects developed specifically for the Innovation Lab by Wilke Weermann, Florian Etti, Alessa Bollack and the Stuttgart Media University (each with follow-up discussions under the title AI Fireside Chat). In the spirit of a laboratory, these artistic projects examine the effectiveness of AI-generated texts, scenographies and avatars, as well as the interweaving of digital and analogue aesthetics and the influences of artificial intelligence on social communication structures. There will also be a lecture-performance by Stefan Kaegi / Rimini Protokoll and a workshop with the Catalan theatre collective La Fura dels Baus.
The Future Innovation Lab will open with a welcome address by Petra Olschowski, Minister of Science, Research and the Arts of the State of Baden-Württemberg, and keynote speeches by computer scientist and 2019 Körber Prize winner Bernhard Schölkopf and science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar. They will not only set the scene for the artistic contributions, but also form the opening of the discursive supporting programme.
